Prof Wang Qijie, Centre Director of Centre for Opto-Electronics and Biophotonics (COEB), TPI and a team of scientists and engineers from Nanyang Technological University, Singapore (NTU Singapore) and the University of Leeds
in the UK have created the first electrically-driven ‘topological’
laser, which has the ability to route light particles around corners -
and to cope with defects in the manufacture of the device.
The invention which was reported in the journal Nature in Feb 2020, overcomes the manudacturing defects of semiconductor lasers through the development of a new type of laser
that is insensitive to defects. This was accomplished by harnessing a
concept from theoretical physics known as 'topilogical states", in order to make a ‘topological laser’.
